Garlic: The Real Superfood

I’ve raved about honey, coconut oil, and bentonite clay as if nothing else mattered, but not all of them combined have the powers of raw garlic. Garlic is known for being anti-everything. It’s antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal, and it also kills yeast. It kills everything…and that’s a good thing!

As far as I know, garlic isn’t jam-packed with nutrients, but it does contain one fighter that’s every sickness-causing thing’s kryptonite: allicin.

Allicin is an organosulfur compound and it activates when garlic is crushed or chopped. According to Dr. Rhonda Patrick, it takes about fifteen minutes for the alliinase enzyme to convert alliin into allicin. This means that before you eat garlic, you should always crush or chop it first and wait a few minutes for the good properties to kick in. Of course, raw garlic has the most benefits, but you can still cook with garlic a bit and reap the benefits of allicin so long as you wait fifteen minutes before you throw it in the pan.

If you feel a cold coming on, eating a clove of raw garlic could help! Use it for UTIs, infections, athlete’s foot, and just about anything else when you feel it coming on. Even if you have a minor fever, a cough, or sore throat, eating raw garlic at the beginning of your illness could stop it dead in its tracks. The best way to cure sickness is to be healthy and prevent it before it happens. Otherwise, act quickly.

Try to incorporate garlic (not garlic powder or pickled garlic) into your daily life. Add fresh garlic to guacamole, meat dishes, or your smoothies if you’re brave. I have no idea if garlic supplements work, but they’re much more expensive than organic garlic cloves you can find in the produce section, so I’m unsure as to why people take them (do they hate the taste of garlic? Is the allicin more concentrated in a supplement? I do not know).

Something good to note: if you eat a raw clove, it may take you out for a few minutes. By this, I mean that you may want to sit or lay down. You may feel faint. Garlic is very strong, so be careful. If you feel as though you’re somewhat weak, try blending it into a sauce or dip instead. A raw clove taken straight is far worse than a shot of straight liquor, believe me.

So, yeah. Garlic is a fantastic go-to for your sickness-fighting needs. Next time you feel something going on, eat a clove or two!
